Planning ahead is the key to creating a patio that is both functional and visually pleasing. A patio, especially if landscaped, can even raise the value of your home. Read on today as Highland Design and Build, an outdoor living and kitchen remodel expert shares, some tips on designing the perfect patio.
1. Consider the purpose of your patio. The first thing to do is decide whether your dream patio will be a gathering place or a getaway space. If you entertain frequently, then a patio with extra seating, lounge and a cozy dining nook is a good choice. If you prefer a more intimate, private patio, a couple of chairs and a bistro table may be enough.
2. Think about the location. Most patios are connected to the kitchen area since that is where people generally come outside or gather. However, if your patio is intended to be a getaway space, this new outdoor addition can be more remote, located toward the back of your home. Finding the best spot will also depend on the kind of landscaping and how close the neighboring homes are.
3. Consider the size. How many people will normally congregate in the space? If you are building a patio with a central fire pit with at least four to five chairs surrounding it, a circle of 14 feet in diameter or larger may be necessary. Like a bathroom remodel, there are no clear-cut rules about how large-scale an outdoor space should be, but make sure that the design is ultimately proportionate to the house.
4. Decide which special features you want. A fireplace is ideal if you plan to spend time on the patio in the evening. A pond or a water fountain adds ambiance and can help cancel out the noise from a busy street. Also, plan your landscape lighting around the space to enhance the beauty of your patio particularly after the sun goes down.
