COVID-19 has changed many facets of everyday life. If you have a daily fitness routine, it’s likely your local gym has closed down, making it difficult to get your reps in. One workaround? Build a home gym! We’re not talking about some bleak corner of your garage or bedroom, but an actual home gym that will make you want to work out, pandemic or no pandemic.
In today’s post, the interior remodelers at Highland Design and Build share some design tips for your own home gym.
Make Sure You Have the Space
One reason that people prefer going to “real” gyms is because of the space, not just for the bulky equipment, but for moving around in. Your first consideration for your home gym is making sure it has adequate space for your gym equipment, with some extra square feet in case you plan on buying more, as well as ample space for doing exercises planks, pushups and any other activities you include in your workout routine.
Color and Lighting Are Important
Color affects moods, which is why home remodelers consider it an important part of any remodeling project. Rooms meant for relaxation such as bedrooms tend to be painted with relaxing colors. For a gym, brighter colors may be more effective at motivating you. Plenty of natural light can also help you focus better and feel more energized. Make the most of natural lighting by choosing a room that has large windows or skylights. Even a basement gym can be naturally lit with the right kind of windows.
Invest In a Full-Length Mirror
A full-length mirror is not just for flexing and selfies. Anyone who regularly works out knows the importance of seeing results unfold before their eyes. Having one in your home will help you stay motivated and also keep an eye on your form as you exercise.
Invest in a Good Sound System
One of the greatest advantages of having a home gym is that you don’t have to use earbuds to listen to your own playlist. Equip your gym with a good sound system, add some acoustic treatment and crank up the volume for full motivation. With a gym this good, you’ll probably want to cancel your gym membership soon.
