One of the best ways to increase the amount of space available in your home is through a deck installation project. To get the most out of your deck, it should be constructed with safety as the number one priority. Decks can be susceptible to damage that may result in injuries if not safely and properly built. To ensure your deck is built as safe as possible and prevent accidents, the outdoor home remodelers at Highland Design and Build share some tips.

-
Secure Your Permits
Before you begin construction on your deck, you should obtain a building permit. Highland Design and Build strongly advises that you plan on spending at least a month planning before starting the project. Before submitting your decking plan to your local building authority or homeowners association, make sure that it complies with the minimum standards in terms of size, location and materials to be utilized in the construction.
-
Strong and Durable Deck Foundation
When it comes to designing a secure deck, having a firm foundation is essential. Your deck and home addition contractors will inform you that the pier system should have deep holes to secure it in place to ensure that it remains strong and long-lasting. If the holes are too shallow, the post may not be able to support the weight of the deck and the flooring that is being placed on it. Before securing your deck posts to the pier with concrete, make sure the bases are fixed and supported with galvanized plates to prevent rotting.
-
Correct Railing Measurements
If your deck is elevated above the ground by more than 30 inches, you’ll need a solid railing to keep individuals on the deck safe from falling over. It is necessary to have a minimum deck height of approximately 36 inches, with vertical posts beneath the handrail spaced no more than four inches apart in any given section. It should be able to withstand 200 pounds of force at any point along the rail.
